Where are my friends? (said the man of the year)

This is just a sample of about 10 million Facebook profiles with a public Current City. Each line in the map stands between the different locations of two Facebook friends.

It means that each line is a friendship – and the whole picture pretty much covers the five continents =)

This is made by Paul Butler – an intern on Facebook’s data infrastructure engineering team.

Each line might represent a friendship made while travelling, a family member abroad, or an old college friend pulled away by the various forces of life. When I shared the image with others within Facebook, it resonated with many people. It’s not just a pretty picture, it’s a reaffirmation of the impact we have in connecting people, even across oceans and borders.

You can read the whole thing here – and the high res pic here.
